This poem erases the front page of the June 18, 1945 Germany edition of The Stars and Stripes, whose headline reads “Yanks Win Last Hilltops Across Tip of Okinawa As July Typhoons Near.” V-E Day had been May 8, so readers of the newspaper in Europe were five weeks past the end of their war. The conflict in the Pacific would continue officially until September.
